As well as the 'essentials' there is a good and varied mix of shops in Praia da Luz, however a lot are naturally tourist gift shops. If you really need a more varied range of shops and superstores you can always pop over to the larger town of Lagos ( only 10 minutes away by car, bus or taxi ).

Update February 2013 Cigarette prices are expected to increase up to 61% as a result of 'austerity measures' also non-alcoholic drinks and frozen foods suffer a VAT increase to 23%.

The 800 cigarette rule applied in October 2011 apparently contravenes European Union law. The rule still is, you can bring back as much as you like as long as you can prove more than 800 is for personal use. You can see this for yourself on the HM Revenue & Customs page. Remember that prices are the same everywhere, including the airport. In line with revised UK customs guidelines as to what constitutes 'personal use' the airport shop will now only sell you a maximum of 800 cigarettes or 1Kg of tobacco. If you wish to take back more than 800, buy from shops in town.

Pastelaria Fabrico ProparioPastry, Bakers. Small Cafe / cake shop. The best place to get bread as it's open really early in the morning and their croissants are to die for. Where :A corner building on the left hand side ( coming from the 'square' ) just past the Ocean Club.

Alternative cash points are situated inside the Baptista supermarket five minutes walk up the hill ( Rua 1 de Maio ), the Banif bank in the square by Baptista or the Espirito Santo 500m Up the hill ( Rua 25 de Abril ) from the town square, on the right hand side of the road and also Barclays a little further up the same hill. Where :On the corner of square about 100m north of the Church.

No credit card transactions over the counter so you need to use the ATM ( Cash point ) in the foyer ( which is accessible at night using your bank card for entry ). Note that the ATM has been known to empty on / during national / bank holidays. Alternative cash points are situated outside the Barclays Bank further up the same hill on the right. Also inside the Baptista supermarket five minutes walk up the hill ( Rua 1 de Maio ) from the square on the right, the Banif bank in the square by Baptista or the Credito Agricola located in the main square.
