An important part of any holiday guide! Here you will find information on all of the Praia da Bars, Restaurants, Cafes and Takeaways I have found.
It should be pretty much a complete list as I endeavour to check and update it at least on a quarterly basis. You may
find just a few details may need updating as thing seem to change frequently, especially in the first quarter of the year. Places change ownership or are brand new. Fortunately the odd one that might close down is usually replaced by a similar business.
Dining out in Luz is a lovely experience with plenty of places to choose from, whether it is a family outing or a more intimate meal, and all are in such a small area. You will find that peak dining times are usually between 19.30 and 21.30.
So if you are planning on eating during this period make sure you book in advance especially during the high season. Getting a table by chance can be quite slim as diners tend to make an evening of it and a 'second sitting' is unusual
in the more popular restaurants.
There is only one problem with Bars and Restaurants in a predominately tourist orientated town, that's the inconsistency of their opening and closing times outside the main season. Whilst all of them are open during the tourist season ( May to September ) they may not actually stay open or keep regular hours if business is quiet.
However, if things are lively you can get some seriously late evenings / early mornings!
As the season winds down many of them will close for at least two or three months starting anytime from the end of September. You will find that from Christmas to the second week in January some places may re-open temporarily
( New Year's Parties etc. ). So the rule of thumb to avoid disappointment is to check / book in advance and don't assume that if they were open at 22.00 yesterday that they will be open at 22.00 today.
2013 Some nice new restaurants ( see top right ) and the inevitable ( these days ) casualties balance the books this year. Still plenty of choice to be had I'm glad to say. Tell me what you think.
2012 Introduced in 2012 is a well deserved section dedicated to the neighbouring village of Espiche. As the village continues to develop it is certainly worth a visit. Boasting several good restaurants and bars, some new, some well established but mostly unknown to the majority of Luz visitors. If you're fit its walkable ( about 2km from Luz Church ), on the other side of the main road ( N125 ) from the turning into Luz. Five minutes drive otherwise and there is plenty of parking available.
01/2012 The redeeming factor for Luz, is that as it has a large community of English residents, you will always find several good restaurants that will remain open all year round. Where possible I've listed opening days / times but these should be used as a guide only.
With the horrendous recession continuing to bite hard, the leisure business is the Algarve ( and all of Portugal for that matter ) is suffering. As part of the government's recovery measures 2012 sees Restaurants, cafés, non-alcoholic beverages and frozen foods VAT increases to 23%. This can only result in increases across the board I'm afraid. However you'll find in true Portuguese tradition they'll be offering the best they can manage even during these difficult times.
06/2011 A quote from a visitors email I received which I think sums things up quite nicely...
"...All in all we didn’t have a bad meal whichever restaurant we went in but the overriding memory would be the service and friendliness wherever we went. Everyone was so welcoming and you felt like they wanted you to be there unlike some other European countries (including our own) where you are made to feel like you are putting them out!..."
Thanks Sarah.
Perhaps when you get back home could you please take the time to drop me an email and let me know how you found your dining experience in Luz ( especially if you tried one the places that I've yet to receive comments on ). Thanks in advance.
If you are a proprietor please let me know if you wish to add your business or have any corrections / additions for your existing entry or are interested in a (left column) advert on this page.
Drinking Tip : Shorts are always pricey, but remember you do get larger measures. Beer prices are not as consistent as they used to be. Some places can be a euro more than others. Expect to pay a bit more if there is entertainment of sorts. Look out for 'happy hour' ( normally much more than an hour ) you can get some good deals especially on beer ( e.g. €2 euros for a large glass )
Dining Tip : Look out for the prato do dia ( dish of the day ), probably on a blackboard outside or inside the restaurant or better still just ask if there is one. It will usually represent the 'best value' on the menu.

Update May 2013
Luz welcomed....
The opening The Windies Grill, An American British grill house on the site of the Lime Tree.
The opening The Mexicano, Introducing Mexican / Cuban /
Argentinean food to Luz at what was the Maharaja Indian.
The opening San Carlo, what was once the Val Verde, just outside of town on the Rua Dirieta.
The opening JD's, taking over what was Godots, with Quizzes, Karaoke and live music.
The opening Jakes, up
scaling the bistro from 'little' Jakes to the larger premises, formerly the Cave bar.
The opening Rios, a cafe / snack bar formerly the Panini.
• However, on the 'missing list'....
• The long established Godots now JDs, following in a similar vein.
• The Panini now is now Rio's at No.2, a cafe / snack bar.
• The Casablanca which opened in 2011, is currently closed.
• The long established Coziha da Luz is currently closed.
• The Maharajah seems to have lost out to the two 'newer' Indian Restaurants near the seafront, replaced by the Mexicano.
Update January 2012
During 2011 Luz welcomed....
The opening The Saffron, another Indian restaurant on the site of the Caveleiro down by the church.
The opening The Snug, a small, very cosy bar. Situated near the Royal Garden Chinese Restaurant just off the square.
The opening Casablanca, a Spanish restaurant. Situated at the top of Rua 25 d'Abril.
The opening Ice Cream Factory, A seafront ( Church end ) ice cream stall.
The opening Coffee Cup Cafe, Replacing the small Cestinho supermarket at the Rua 25d'abril entrance to the St. James complex.
The opening Barroca Bar and Restaurant, formerly the Plough and Harrow.
The complete refurbishment of the Embassy Nightclubfor the summer.
Update January 2011
During 2010 Luz welcomed....
The opening Fabrica, a great bistro / restaurant. Situated on the corner of Rua da Praia on the seafront.
• However, on the 'missing list' for 2011....
• Maxims. After quickly establishing itself as a popular watering hole with both visitors and locals alike. Maxims has regrettably closed down.
• Plough and Harrow. A restaurant that built up a good reputation especially for its Sunday Lunches. Has now closed but will be re-opening ( as the Barroca ) under new owners this summer.
• The Cavaleiro, down by the church remains closed or a second year. I can't believe a prime spot like this hasn't been snapped up by now.
Update January 2010
During 2009 Luz welcomed....
The re-opening Godots,
after refurbishment. Now a Tapas Bar, with a terrace (sea views). Just off the 'town square' ( almost opposite the Chinese restaurant ).
A new bar Maxims just off the 'town square' ( before the Chinese restaurant ).
The Prive ( as it will probably be still referred to ) is under new ownership and has now become the Embassy Club.
• However, on the 'missing list' for 2010....
The Cavaleiro restaurant, down by the church, closed down at the back end of 2009 and is currently up for sale.
Update August 2009 A lot of new visitors comments this summer! Many thanks to those of you who have taken the time to share your findings. Please keep them coming and please let me know if you find any 'good meal deals' that are not mentioned here.
Update April 2009 Loule council has led the way by giving local bars, cafes and restaurants a 'recession' tax break. They have reduced the tax on commercial outdoor ( terrace ) seating by 50%. It might make that crucial difference to some of the smaller establishments. Lets hope this spreads throughout the Algarve!
Update March 2009 As the Algarve suffers ( more so than the rest of Portugal ) from the recession its worth looking out for those 'special meal deals' as restaurants seek to attract customers.
Update January 2009
During 2008 Luz welcomed....
The extremely pleasant Amici Restaurant, Luz's first Italian restaurant.
The hot n' spicy Pashmina Tandoori restaurant, Luz's second Indian restaurant.
The original 'local cafe' Chicca started its first full season, since its refurbishment, as a proper (albeit 'cosy') restaurant.
• However, on the 'missing list' for 2009....
• My favourite Soozy's Bar has closed its doors. This is a bar I'll sorely miss! I believe Baptista has bought the property ( amongst others in the arcade ) for future re-development.
• Also in the Commercial Centre, the short lived ( but sweet ) Irish Legend Bar has also closed down. However, they are relocating, so will keep you posted.
• The Marujo restaurant closed its doors only to re-open for the summer as the Pashmina Tandoori restaurant.
• The Almeida cafe closed and has now become a newsagent.
Update January 2009 Concessions along the Algarve’s beaches will be allowed to open outside of the normal bathing season, which is between June 1 and September 30, this year. This includes Bars, Restaurants and other facilities providing they submit requests to the relevant port authority. This basically means there is a chance of some extra facilities being available for visitors out of season.
Update August 2008 As I have started receiving emails from Luz visitors offering their comments on restaurants and bars, on this page, I have added them ( with their permission ) to the foot of the relevant entries. Why not send me yours!
Any remarks included here are my own views, and those of contributors ( in the visitors comments ). You may not agree. So why not try them and let me know
if you agree or disagree or have some of your own you think I should include.
Update January 2008 As of January 1st 2008, Portugal introduced its No Smoking Policy. There are options to allow smoking in some places but due to the vagueness of the new law 99% of bars and 100% of restaurants in Luz are now non-smoking ( at least inside the premises ) to avoid the hefty fines. However, as of January three bars in Luz, that I know of, have complied with the regulations and have opted to be smoking bars ( The Bull, Luz Tavern and Cafe Jasmin ), there will probably be more making the necessary changes as the year progresses. Fortunately with the generally good weather for the majority of the year and the number of establishments with terraces the 'problem' does not impact quite as much as it does in the U.K.
Update December 2007 By the end of the year, Luz's oldest restaurant, Godots had closed its doors. As of the beginning of 2009 the property still remains empty.

Tipping/Gratuities: Generally 10 - 15%. Make sure you check whether a service charge has already been included in your bill as some restaurants have started to adopt this practice. You may wish to modify any 'tip' as a result. |
Bear in mind like most beach holiday resorts, business is very much seasonal in Praia da Luz. Nearly all the restaurants and bars run their own timetables as to when they change opening and closing times. During the months of November through to March some places may close completely or have drastically reduced opening days and / or hours. Whilst I try to keep up to date with the changes they are not always in 'black and white' and will vary as the mood or number of customers dictate. If you do choose to eat out always have a back up choice to avoid disappointment. The good news there will always be at least one place open no more than a stones throw away. |

|
A modern, smartly styled Italian restaurant. Light, bright and spacious. Marble table
tops and cut glass. A comprehensive totally Italian menu. Exceptionally well prepared and beautifully presented, but good sized portions nonetheless. My choice had to be the monk fish alternatively the veal cutlets with spaghetti
Milanese,
with a nicely chilled Frascati. The sorbet for dessert just has to tried.
Open :Monday to Saturday Evenings from 18.00.

Arte Burguer
|
A fair sized, cafeteria type layout. Though it is located in a basement it is still quite bright and 'airy'. Some fairly interesting art work on the walls, that changes regularly, showcasing local artists ( see the web site for forthcoming artistes ). A fairly basic but good 'all round' menu, e.g. steaks, fish and chips, fry ups, various sandwiches, salads, baguettes etc. See their website for the chef's suggestions in pictures. A take away service is also available.
Open : Lunch & 18.00 - 22.00.

Atlantico Restaurant |
Still most definitely a favourite of mine even after several years. Excellent food and wine,
friendly service and attention. A loosely 'nouveau' styled presentation, deceptive as the portions are more
than adequate. A Dutch run restaurant with the owners, Paul Wortelboer as the chef and his wife Joanna taking good care of the guests ( not forgetting the rest of the team! ). Be warned that they do not compromise on quality or service!
So be prepared to wait, I promise it will be worth the while. The sliced Duck breast or Pork Escalope are recommended. The rib of lamb I had in June 2007 was fantastic. The tiger prawns in October 2007 and again in July 2008 even better. Occasional Fish 'specials'
and 'wine of the month' recommendations.
Open :Tuesday - Sunday. 19.00 to 22.30.

Aquario RestaurantePortuguese |
This Portuguese Restaurant has a good reputation. Run by Chef brothers, Vitor and Sergio, together with Manuel and Helena. Stuffed Crab starter ( for two ). Prices ranged from €2 to €8 for starters, more for the crab dish and €9 to €15 per person for main dishes. Not the most inspiring frontages and though quite small inside it is comfortable and homely. ChaplinsEnglish |
Fairly inexpensive. Great for British dishes when you want to go for 'home cooking'. Fish & Chips, Bangers and Mash etc.. Large portions, well prepared and nice
service. They do a Cataplana for one which is unusual ( normally only for two ). The rack of lamb is probably one of the best I've ever eaten. The steaks are more than substantial. 3 course Sunday Roasts
from €15 - ( 12.30 to 21.00 ). Take away service for fish & chips, curries, bangers and mash. Gets very busy during mid and high season so make sure you book in advance.

Chicca |
At the Chicca all food is made from scratch, fresh every day on the premises, using local organic ingredients whenever possible. Originally a Portuguese 'local' cafe, but refurbished in 2007, it is now a small and cool restaurant. Outside catering and takeaway services available. Lunches with vegetarian selections. Quiches, Salads, Pates, Pies, Roast meats and Chicken dishes. As it is only small bookings are recommended, or chance going early. The blackboard styled menu changes pretty much daily. Open :Monday - Saturday. Lunch: 12.30 - 15.00, Dinner 18.30, ( last orders 20:30+ ).

City Sol (Chinese)Chinese |
Apparently a Chef from Shanghai. A good alternative to the Royal Garden. Seats about 80. A couple of larger tables with Lazy Susan's. Very brightly lit and certainly needs to be busy for any atmosphere. Perhaps a slightly more limited menu to the Royal Garden but all the usual dishes are there and the prices are comparable. Children's meals. Set lunch menu. Dine in the gardens or Take away. Large Parking area. Open :12.00 - 15.00 and 18.00 - 23.00, 7 days.

The Dolphin RestaurantS.African & Portuguese |
A very smart, nicely sized South African restaurant ( Ostrich Schnitzel, Bobotie, Sosaties ) and some good Portuguese dishes and fresh fish. Try the Tiger Prawns with Mango and a sweet curry sauce dipper as a starter, Saddle of Lamb on a platter with pureed greens and pumpkin for the main. Good, pleasant service even when busy. Good views ( if you have a table on the covered terrace ) from the elevated location above the African Art & Craft shop. Has a separate / bar waiting room. Make sure you book in peak season. Worth chancing it without a booking at the back end of the season. Open :Evenings only.

"...We loved The Dolphin...My one tiny criticism of the Dolphin restaurant was the service was extremely slow. "...If you were a fan of the O’Poco – and we’ve been happily going there since 1999 – you’ll like the Galley because it’s pretty much the same. About the biggest difference is they’ve cut back on the staff visiting your table; it used to be that a different wait staff brought every individual item (and heaven forbid you asked the couvert person for wine! It seemed to be a very big dilemma for them). Now, it’s just one person (thank heavens!) although still a bit brusque and business-like. But the fish is consistent and good. You can get the same dish for less elsewhere in town, but The Galley’s view of the beach is worth an extra euro...."

Lazuli |
Sea front cafe / bar. Tourist meals and snacks. All day breakfasts. Unlike the Habana, the Lazuli serves Portuguese bacon ( which I prefer ). Also their Orange juice is freshly squeezed, not out of a carton. This and the adjacent Habana cafe are extremely popular and can get quite busy ( especially around lunchtimes ), fortunately the turnaround is pretty swift. In the quieter periods its a nice place to chill out, read the papers and watch the world go by. Has Internet facilities. Warning: A bit of a suntrap. Open :Normally 7 days a week. 09.00 - 02.00.

( Nearby ) Espiche Bars, Cafes & Restaurants
About time Espiche had its own section. The village continues to grow, and development has transformed the place. There has always been some nice places to eat and drink in Espiche, but mostly only known to 'locals' and the more adventurous visitors to Luz. Its a bit of a walk from Luz centre ( about 2km ) but worth it in fine weather. There's also plenty of parking to be had. With a couple of bars and restaurants it's worth a walk out.
